What is Esthr?
Esthr is a reference library and community for caregivers navigating early intervention and K-12 special education. It explains evaluations, the IEP and 504 process, denial letters, and the deadlines that come with them, in plain language.
What is an IEP?
An IEP, or Individualized Education Program, is a written plan for a child who qualifies for special education under federal law. It sets the child's goals, the services the school will provide, and how progress is measured. The school must follow it.
What is the difference between an IEP and a 504 plan?
An IEP provides special education and related services for a child who qualifies under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. A 504 plan provides accommodations, such as extra time or seating, for a child with a disability who does not need specialized instruction. An IEP is a teaching plan; a 504 plan is an access plan.
What can I do if my child is denied services?
A denial is not the end of the process. You can ask the school for prior written notice explaining the decision, request an independent evaluation, and appeal. Each step has its own deadline, so the date on the letter matters. Esthr walks through what each option means and what to send.
Do I have to pay to use Esthr?
The library is free. A paid community sits alongside it for caregivers who want ongoing help. Esthr does not paywall a right or a deadline.
